After a long walk coming from Aztlán located at the western north of Mexico, the Mexicas arrived in the valley of Mexico City guided by their principal god Huitzilopochtli and directed by their Tenoch priest.

The legend tells that while they were seeking for food, they discovered finally on an island, the eagle perched on a cactus rooted in a stone, devouring a snake. This was the sign they were seeking, the prophecy of Huitzilopochtli was carried out.

It was in 1325 in which the mythical town of Tenochtitlán was founded.

Ouroboros

The circular image of a snake swallowing its own tail - an emblem of the eternal and indivisible, and of cyclic time. The image has been variously interpreted, combining the creation symbolism of the egg (the space within the circle), the terrestrial symbolism of the serpent and the celestial symbolism of the circle.

In its original Egyptian religious form, the ouroboros is thought to have symbolized the sun's daily return to its point of departure, passing through the sky and underworld. In Greece, death and rebirth symbolism seems indicated by its use in Orphic iconography. Gnostics saw it as an image of self-sustaining Nature, endlessly recreating itself, and of unity in duality, the essential oneness of life, the universal serpent moving through all things.

The maxim "One is all" sometimes accompanies the symbol. As an emblem of eternity, it was associated in the Roman Empire with Saturn, as the god of time, and Janus, the god of the New Year.

It's been quite a voyage of discovery for me these last few years; artistically, philosophically and emotionally. When I first began toying with the the symbolic presence of words I didn't have a clear realization of where it would take me. My first thoughts were, "Wow, this is interesting! ..I wonder what would happen if I added this.. or tweaked that?" With further experiments, an unfolding array possibilities crept into my mind.

Through the transforming of type into multilayered mandalas and finding inspiration in the simple step of mirroring, these linguistic characters began to emerge. During my time at Pleasure and Pain Ink I was fortunate to also be taught the elements of script lettering. With the added flair of filigree these 'Word Players' started to take shape. Whereas my initial lettering was slightly block like with an accented curvature, this recent font adjustment suggests a more delicate and organic look. Depending on the word, some work better as faces, others as bodies and combining words allows for all sorts of word play (:

A play on words which can be interpreted as a face, three faces or a complete figure. The top portion exhibits the mind of a Warrior, propelled into action with a cunning resolve and sense of honor.

Directly below are the eyes and heart of an Artist, patiently perceiving patterns and displaying circulated inspiration into a chosen artistic medium.

At the bottom rests the mouth and feet of a Shaman. A combination of Warrior and Artist, the Shaman expresses messages of wisdom and healing and traverses a path which requires integrity and courage. The Shaman is a master of performance and a dedicated guide.

A taste:::

Used to assist in the telling of myth, masks have maintained a long preserved and widespread tradition throughout the history of Mankind. As such, they are closely entwined with language. The stories spoken verbally or enacted physically were all the more engaging with a mask to bring an added sense of mystery and symbolic presence. They are excellent aides in the personification of elemental forces and often provide a face for the faceless.

To wear a mask is to alter the perceptual exchange that takes place between the wearer and the audience. With tribal ceremony involving masked players there is great opportunity for expressive participation and community bonding.

With these aspects in mind, the majority of the 'masks' to be presented have been formed from mirrored word arrangements.

The business has been registered, the equipment has been purchased, the ink is in. From January to June I apprenticed at the Mississauga based tattoo studio, Pleasure and Pain Ink and thought it well overdue to post some shots. Went in with a blank slate and now I'm sporting eleven tattoos, nine of which are self applied and all placed on my legs... so far. The rumors are true, it's addictive. Started on my feet and with each one I learn something new, with each one I try to challenge myself. To be honest, I didn't imagine doing this two years ago. Nevertheless, the encouraging words of numerous friends prompted me to consider it and when the opportunity arose, I went for it.

I can't think of a canvas more sacred than skin and I'm excited to expand into this field with full force!

This has been sitting in my sketchbook for a good while. Couldn't bring myself to finish the stippled background by hand so I completed it in Photoshop.

Mainly just wanted to draw a big bug, but was partially inspired by Hayao Miyazaki's Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind. Situated in a post apocalyptic future, it's a story of mankind's struggle for survival against the ever spreading toxic forests and monstrously mutated insects. A great movie and an even better manga. As always, Miyazaki is the master!

This is known as a Lamassu, a celestial being from Mesopotamian mythology. In art, they were depicted as hybrids ~ winged bulls or lions with the head of a human male and considered househould protective spirits of the common Babylonian people. Babylonian history later portrays these bull-men as the protectors of kings and statues of them were often used as gatekeepers. Usually sculpted with five legs to show balance from all angles.

Particularly inspired by what James, the site's anonymous host referred to as the 'six heart virtues' and adapted them into the Flower of Life template. At it's core is a six petalled formation, ideally suited for the words Admiration, Compassion, Understanding, Valor, Humility and Forgiveness .

I'll be taking part in a Hamilton dance festival on June 11 during the James Street Art Crawl and co-ordinating a small rollerblade routine with a few back up bladers. Should be selling prints and shirts as well.

It's shaping up to be a quite a large choreography with around 200 people in downtown Gore Park.

A stand, dance and performance in dedication to the enduring struggle against racism, poverty and social injustice. A recognition of all who have fought this long battle before us, and a prayer that our world will awaken.

First prototype color copies. Compared with the black & white versions below, these have a much greater depth to them. Further still, once I incorporate 3D sculpural elements and holography. Until then, I'm left experimenting with color gradients and layering to evoke more vibrancy.

On the computer screen and especially with my larger prints I've noticed the interesting feature of faces popping up in certain regions of the vortex depending on my proximity to it.

In other words, the human mind has a great ability for spotting patterns, such that these crisscrossing shapes at various fades will often reveal recognizable facial features. Some look happy, some look sad, some look altogether alien:::

I find it fascinating to ponder that perhaps these patterns personify entities residing in a World of Words. A world that we all seem to tap into so freely and draw meaning from. A world with a foundation in Symbol and built by Prose.

This is a Land of Language that exists at the edge of print, between the spaces and lines. It's a realm riding the defining curve of conceptual understanding. It flows through the cultural matrix of sounds, recognized and accepted as speech.

At a certain distance from the image these "faces" will be perceived. Upon closer inspection, they lose their distinct forms and the eye sees only shapes. In the case of these two, the shapes are those of LOVE and UNITY.

Composed entirely of the words: (H)ealth (W)ealth (H)appiness. Mirrored and spun, this was quite fun :) I found it a very relaxing and a constantly surprising exercise to create this mandala. One of my first attempts with transparent gradients and am very pleased with the results. I purposefully molded the letters H W H to look similar to ripples and am currently exploring with motion graphics to further this concept.

Love Fractal

My attempt to create a fractal using only the word LOVE. Haven't figured out how to incorporate the Mandelbrot set into the design as yet, but hope to animate it continuously zooming inwards, spirally shifting and morphing into different words and colors.

Modern science now recognizes that nature takes form around the basis of fractal geometry. Unfortunately, this is not something generally taught in school. Rather, the smooth triangles, cones, cubes and spheres representative of Euclidean geometry are most widely administered. They continue to work well as tools to describe shape structure and pattern recognition and are also quite commonly found in the world of manufacturing, however, these shapes cannot be used to accurately model the universe. Math for such requires a tad more 'roughness.'

Coined by Benoit Mandelbroit in 1975, the term fractal was derived from the Latin fractus meaning 'broken' or 'fractured.' The fundamental characteristic of fractals is that their structure repeats itself in a very self-similar fashion at any level of magnification. Examples found in nature include clouds, coastlines, mountain ranges and lightning bolts, as well as various vegetables and animal coloration patterns.

They are also found within our body as seen with the branching networks of our respiratory, circulatory and nervous systems. From the cells and upward into a fully formed human, fractals may even extend unseen into the social framework of civilizations. They link the ancient mystical understanding "As above, so below" with many of today's mathematical and scientific models.

Further still, language itself could very well be considered a multidimensional fractal. After all, what is any alphabet (or font for that matter) but a set of self similar symbols, combined endlessly through writing or speech to evoke layer upon layer of meaning.

In the case of a Mandelbrot set, regardless of the extent to which one zooms in on its boundary there is always additional detail to see. During the twelve-second zoom in the animation linked here, the set becomes magnified eleven-million fold. Thus, assuming the first frame is life-size at 45 mm across, a carbon atom would comprise 36 pixels in the final frame.

Body Language

This is a project I've been been working on for the last eleven months or so. It's constantly evolving, with no end in sight. I've displayed it in various venues and have received some great feedback. Now I think it's finally ready for an online presentation.

Essentially it’s a collection of positively charged words arranged in the form of a female figure, ultimately designed to be a reflection of the Divine Feminine.

To give credit where credit is due, I’d like to note that the pose I used was greatly inspired by the Sacred Mirrors series by Alex Grey.

It's important that I also delve a little bit into the background of my process to give this project some context. It began when researching the power of sigils and repeated affirmations. For those who aren’t familiar with the term sigil, it’s a ‘magical’ device which is frequently used in occult rituals, often times worn as a talisman or placed in and around an alter or shrine. In effect, it’s a symbol containing a message of one’s conscious desires and aspirations, directed at the subconscious mind.

Since the subconscious absorbs and interprets surroundings through the analysis and recognition of symbolic shapes and patterns, a sigil is meant to be put up somewhere you will see it on a regular basis like a mirror or fridge door. The purpose is that through repeated exposure to this intentionally simplified symbol one can more readily manifest their desires. However, there's a catch... for a sigil to be most effective it must be forgotten. To put it another way, first specify the desire and charge it with intent, then let it go. This can be done by designing numerous sigils, putting them away somewhere for a couple weeks (out of sight, out of mind) and then bring them back out once their individual meanings have escaped your conscious mind. Some sigil makers even destroy them in order to fully let go and allow the 'magic' to run its course. Detachment is crucial.

So after playing around with sigils for a little while I decided to take one word and manipulate it into a pattern. That word was PEACE. While drawing it in my sketchbook I noticed that from a certain angle the words formed what looked like eyes. In continuing with this thread the natural development was to turn it into a face and then incorporate a variety of words into a full body.

With that to springboard from I took to the task of creating a prototype with 66 words.

The most current version contains 161.

For a closer look to see the words I've used, here are some details of the head, hands, torso and legs.

I've also created a color version and have included the seven chakra system. Printed an earlier version at nearly life size (6' x 4') on a vinyl sheet and it looks absolutely stunning. I'm hoping to print it to fit the side of a building someday...

Super Sigils!

As I mentioned in the above post, this has been a constantly evolving project that began as a somewhat simple design and has grown increasingly complex. While researching Buddhist artwork and digitally mirroring and adjusting fonts I became inspired to create word mandalas at different degrees of rotation. The first one I made was LOVE. After creating dozens of these with the words used in Body Language, I spun full sentences and then sentences within words. Felt an appropriate term to describe them might be “Suggesdalas.”
Will be posting some color versions in the near future...

I’m currently printing Suggesdala posters and t-shirts and am undergoing plans to extend into a whole line of products. Also open to commissions for personalized Suggesdalas and you can have a name, affirmation, quote, poem or song customized into any language. Pricing differs based on word count and print size.

A series I'm working on which I may develop into a narrative. Mainly just playing around with color and texture, fast and loose. It begins with a figure awakening in a strange realm of chaotic energy. He quickly becomes aware of a shadowy aura emanating from his body and it doesn't take much longer for him to realize he can control it by focusing and manipulating the white light densely coiled and spiraling within him. That's as much as I have so far, not sure what's next...

Centurypede

A sketch inspired by Kurt Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse-Five. In it the main character Billy Pilgrim becomes "unstuck in time" and experiences past and future events out of sequence over the course of the novel. At one point he is kidnapped by aliens from the planet Tralfamadore and exhibited in their exoplanetary zoo. The Tralfamadorians just so happen to see things in four dimensions and have already witnessed every instant of their lives. They believe in predestination and say they cannot change anything about their fates, but are able to concentrate upon any moment of their choice.

So to elucidate further, they describe a human life as seen in the fourth dimension to be like a centipede of countless arms and legs stretched out from birth to death. Every moment and movement captured as fragments densely crisscrossing and interacting with countless other centipedes. Too much to grasp in its entirety, so I simplified the concept into a collection of faces that begin at the fetus on the tail end and gradually grow older, finally culminating with a grimacing skull. The swirled ripple around the fetus and portal in the eye of the skull are a linked vortex, representing the process of reincarnation.

To look back upon human history it would appear that peace is merely the time between wars, considering that a sizable portion of recorded history is riddled with acts of savagery and slaughter. As such, the hourglass is continuously being flipped and the process repeated.

The dove slowly dissolves into the open hatch of a black tank teetering on the precipice of a cascading oil wave. Above the dove sits the Flower of Life, an ancient and universal icon of creation. Also representative of the underlying order contained within apparently chaotic conditions.

In each of the corners spin the gears of war, powered at their core by the ruthless greed of the Industrial Military Complex ~ personified by a snake coiled around a bomb. Standing as pillars on either end of the hourglass are DNA strands containing humanity's potential for creation as well as destruction.

Set behind it all sits Earth's energy source, the radiant inferno that is the Sun.

Inspired by the star child at the end of 2001: A Space Odyssey, it represents the evolution of mankind from terrestrial dweller to galactic being. Linked umbilically and telepathically, fractals bloom from their foreheads containing twenty more fetuses in accordance with the Fibonacci sequence (1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8) and each is complete with it's own miniature fractal pattern. Ultimately this piece embodies the unfolding act of co-creation echoing throughout space and time onwards into infinity. A friend of mine jokingly mentioned that I should turn this into a wallpaper and put it up in a fertility clinic.

Goddess of the Harvest

This piece is my tribute to Demeter. In Greek mythology she was the most generous of the great Olympian goddesses. Beloved for her service to mankind, she gave the gift of the harvest as reward for cultivation of the soil. Also known as the Roman goddess Ceres, Demeter was credited with teaching humans how to grow, preserve, and prepare grain.

She was the only Greek goddess involved on a day-to-day basis in the lives of the common folk. While others occasionally "dabbled" in human affairs when it suited their personal interests, or came to the aid of "special" mortals they favored, Demeter was truly the nurturer of mankind.

Demeter was also the only Greek goddess who could truly empathize with the human experience of suffering and grief, having experienced it fully herself.

Seen here, she is dancing over a newly seeded crop, bestowing the land with fertility for a bountiful harvest.

A stag and doe greet the new dawn as morning mist curls through the mountains. Initially the mountains were much rockier and more jagged. I decided they should have a smoother quality and designed them more like oscillating sound waves, rising and falling as a new day settles in.

As I developed this piece I felt the horse should be running from something, so I added that purplish red thing in the distance. Upon reflection I felt it could be interpreted in many ways. Perhaps as a fire which is rapidly engulfing the hillside. Or perhaps an ooze with an appetite for destruction; something spewed forth from the ground or possibly arriving by means of meteorite. Perhaps the ooze took form as a stallion, now galloping wildly forward into an unknown world.

With additional reworking I felt that the plasma wisps reminded me of underwater anemone and adjusted the color scheme to suit this idea. The terrain has become more naturally contoured and I've thrown in some bubbles for greater effect. To further elucidate upon my initial idea to incorporate sacred geometry into the series, I've also added the Flower of Life as a pulsating orb in the upper left.As you can see, I've added a background. I liked the idea of having the environment respond in some way to the animal's presence. The ground became a sort of holographic gridwork with etheric wisps of plasma springing outwards as if dancing with the movements of the tiger. As you'll see I've incorporated this element into many the following pieces.

Hey folks, it's been a while since my last post and I finally felt it was time for an update. Now that I have a little more time on my hands since summer's rolled around I should be posting a lot more regularly. Got lots of new art and I needs to bust it out for y'all. For starters, here's the progress on the sacred animal series I've been working on. When the series is complete it's going to become a large panoramic landscape populated with dozens of them crazy critters!
